Travelling in Portugal and Holland by myself this summer was one of the most rewarding and amazing experiences I have ever had. I was free to do the things I wanted to do, see the things I wanted to see, and travel at my own leisure, with nobody to hold me back but myself. It was liberating to say the least. I visited art galleries such as the Stedlijk Gallery and Van Gough Gallery in Amsterdam, and historical sites such as Anne Frank's House in Amsterdam, St. Jorge's Castle in Lisbon, and Pena Palace and Moorish Castle in Sintra, Portugal. I ate pizza by myself for dinner on the beach, and drank popular Thailand cocktails at The Embassy Festival in The Hague. Travelling by myself, and seeing all of these wonderful sights on my own, made me realise that I can do things by myself, I don't have to rely on others to do things with, and just because you are alone, doesn't mean that the sights are any less magnificent, and instead of sharing these with someone else, you just end up smiling like a lunatic to nobody but yourself, and have these special memories all to yourself, that nobody else will ever have, because they are yours. Travelling has made me get over my fear of flying, kind of, and I have solidified my love of airports and public transport in general. It has made me more confident that I want a career in the future that involves travelling to wonderful places, and hopefully getting paid to do this, experiencing different paces of living, helping others in different countries, and passing on your own knowledge to the benefit those people.
Over the summer I worked at Dunsley Hall Hotel back where I live at home, where they are building a new business, called Harley's Smokehouse, where one of my colleagues is designing the whole branding aesthetic of the new business, from menu's to signage. This colleague also has a degree in Fine Art, which may prove to be useful to my degree if I am required to do any collaboration work with outside creatives. Being there whilst this branding process has been underway, they have shared with me some troubles they have faced working with the client so closely, and the whole process in general, which will be beneficial for me when working with clients as I will know more what is expected of me, and how to communicate with the client as well.
Other than this one minor contact I have made over the summer, I haven't been in contact with any other creatives at all. I wanted to take this summer as a break to think about what I want to do with my life, and earn money so I can see more of the world, as this is what I am most passionate about right now. Immediately at the start of the summer, before moving back home, I experimented a lot with screen printing, letterpress and paper cut, as these are some techniques that I wanted to learn more about, and I am pleased that I have experimented with these techniques in my spare time, as now in brief's I will have more knowledge of suck techniques and will more easily be able to experiment with them, without having to figure out how to do these processes in the first place.
