OUGD402 STUDIO BRIEF 2 CRITIQUES

This critique was kind of a final one, where we had to present our near finished designs and outcomes to the rest of the year, to receive any feedback on how we could improve before the final submission next month.

This is the presentation that I used to present to the rest of the year and two of my tutors:

I thought I got some really helpful feedback from my peers and tutors. They thought that my ideas communicated an effective persona clearly, but perhaps for my business cards I could try duplexing them, having a very smooth, matte white card for the front, and then a much more textured one for the back, to emphasise my two styles of working better. I thought this would work really well in highlighting this, and I'd like to use a velvet finish on the front, similar to The Gallery and Munroe House business cards. It was also commented how the split in block colour and mono print works really nicely in creating a sleek design that highlights the two sides of my work. Someone also commented on what I said, that I changed my previous logo designs to look less feminine and girly, but they thought that those designs from previous critiques where I had showed them worked really well and thought it suited me as a designer as a lot of work is quite feminine. I do agree with this as a lot of my work is quite fun and might be perceived as being feminine, however this isn't how I want to portray myself to my clients, I want to appeal to both men and women, so perhaps this is something I should work on in my actual brief's, not to make all my designs quite as feminine, but to make them either unisex, feminine or masculine, not a bit of everything with a feminine touch.
Someone also asked why I had used the name "BEX" for my business cards when, presumably because everyone at university calls me "Becky". I chose BEX because I thought this would sound more punchy and has a much nicer ring to it than Becky does, it makes it sound a little different, and also because my Mum calls me Bex at home, which is a friendly reminder of those who are really close to me. It was also suggested I could try screen printing instead of the mono printed or digital shapes, which might add something to my designs, especially if I screen printed where the mono printed pattern was actually onto my business cards, which might show more practically my practical side.

Taking this feedback into consideration, I will try and see if I can duplex my business cards, although this would mean getting them sent off to a printers which could be expensive. I will also enquire into where The Gallery at Munroe House got their business cards printed, and what stock they used as I really like the velvet feel to it, which is similar to the stock used on the cover of an Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll book I own and have posted on another blog post. I think I will stick with this design for my business cards rather than going back to my old design which may be more reflective of my personal style, as this is more the style of work I am aiming to achieve, rather than what I am currently producing. I don't think I will screen print onto my business cards, although I could use a texture from previous screen printing and put that onto my business cards in the same way as I have for my mono prints, however that would be the same as I have currently done and I prefer the colours and textures of my mono prints to my screen prints.
