OUGD402 STUDIO BRIEF 1 - STUDY TASK 1

I chose to study this BA Graphic Design course at Leeds College of Art because I liked how far away the university was from my home. It wasn't so far away that coming home was an impossibility, but wasn't so close that I felt like I hadn't really moved away either. I also liked the small year sizes the course offered, as I felt that in a smaller group it is easier to get to know your fellow course mates and teaching can be done more specifically and intimately with the students. I also felt it would give me a better opportunity to get one to one help from tutors if needed, making the course more personal. I chose Leeds College of Art because I love the city of Leeds. I find the architecture so inspiring, the hustle and bustle of the city motivating, and the atmosphere welcoming and cheerful. A main reason for me choosing Graphic Design is that I liked how broad the course was, how you could experiment with so many areas, such as photography, animation, and typography. It doesn't just lead you down one path, you can go in so many different directions with it. It also leads to such a wide array of job opportunities afterwards, which was very appealing to me. Finally, I found the tutors relaxed and funny, and felt that I would fit in well with the way of working here, that I'd be able to have fun and work hard at the same time.

During my time on this BA Graphic Design course I would like to learn how to screen print, as I think this is an excellent way of producing bold typography and images, which I feel would be ideal for my style of working. I would also like to learn how to use Adobe CC professionally, as I have a basic knowledge at the moment, but feel I would benefit massively from knowing the programmes inside out, and feel this would dramatically improve my work. I also would like to learn to be more creative and imaginative, as sometimes I struggle to come up with creative responses to a brief. I hope my peers and tutors will inspire me to be more imaginative. I would also like to learn new ways of producing typography, as I'm sure there are many methods out there that I haven't come across that are exciting and that my work would benefit from. I am hoping that during this course I will learn to complete a brief more efficiently, getting straight to the point rather than waffling on about artists or techniques I know I wont use, but put in "just in case".

At present I feel I have impeccable time management skills. I feel I am an extremely organised person, and am very good at balancing my studies, personal life and all the necessities such as sleeping and eating. I feel I am a very motivated person, as once I start a task I won't stop until I see it through to the end, and complete it to the best of my ability. I think I am a self-sufficient person and am good at working independently, which I feel will benefit me in this degree as you don't get spoon fed the work, you have to do a lot of it on your own back. Artistically I feel I am quite good at producing artworks that look like they have been printed, using strong lines and blocks of bold colours. I also feel I have a lot of patience with a project and will persevere with a task until I am satisfied with it.

I am inspired by post cards in art galleries. I find something interesting and aesthetically appealing in seeing smaller versions of artworks all in a line on a wall, making a new piece of artwork as a unit. Paperchase the stationary shop also inspires me a lot. I love all their quirky and colourful pieces, especially the rubbers that look like all kinds of objects, foods and animals that you can take apart and build up again. The magazines ELLE and LOVE also inspire my work, as I love the fashion photography in them, the colourful and bold ideas that are portrayed. Instagram and Pinterest are major sources of inspiration for me, as the graphic design you can find on Pinterest especially is just amazing and awe inspiring. All the bizarre and crazy things are posted in Pinterest, and I love that. Instagram is awesome for lingerie, some of the colour ways for lingerie, especially from Australia, is amazing, using blocks of colour to make up the shape of the garment, and the photographs of models sporting such beautiful designs is just out of this world. Finally, the Where's Wally illustrations by Martin Handford are a massive inspiration for me, as I find the basic colours used simple and effective with the complexity of the illustrations, so that although the illustrations look complex and chaotic they are in fact made up of a lot of simple shapes and colours.

I hope to take all of these aims and hopes and challenges with me throughout the whole of my 3 years on this course, and build upon them and achieve them, to make me a better graphic designer and my work more professional.
